Loreta Shengelia

Loreta Shengelia has made a significant contribution to the development of Georgian books and printed graphics. Her illustration of “The Torture of Shushanika” is one of the most outstanding among the illustrations for this work. She has also illustrated “The Wisdom of Lies”, “The Men in the Panther’s Skin”, Otia Ioseliani’s stories, Goethe’s “The Passions of Young Werther”, Shakespeare’s plays: “Richard the Third”, “Othello”, “Julius Caesar” and many collections of Georgian poets.

Her illustration of “The Men in the Panther’s Skin” is kept in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg and Sorbonne Universities and the Moscow Institute of Calligraphy.

In addition to illustrations, the artist created a series of large-format printed graphics compositions and portraits. His engravings are mostly made using the etching technique, where all the methods of engraving on metal are used to achieve an artistic effect.

He combines his creative activity with teaching at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts, is a professor (1997), and a Cavalier of the Order of Honor (2002).
